Spring 2023 Welcome Poem
Everyone knows, the Shark is rough and mighty -
Though he envies the dolphin’s sweet and soft exterior,
Its fiery soul in wait inside
And the vast and various creatures of the sea,
Like every grain of sand on the beach
Or every snowflake in the air,
Different -
If only in minutiae, purpose in each wave,
Unique, changing, growing,
As all that you’ll see, if you take this long swim
Across the ocean, its cycle, its motion,
Swim through the waving seaweed,
Explore the water, for it will leave, renew, and return,
Like everything, like every being,
Seeking discovery.
Everyone knows, they must know who they are,
But the shark, rough and mighty,
Who longs to be a dolphin, to be gentle and wise,
Clever as the octopus, or playful as the monkey,
No longer judged by sight, the terror of the night,
He lets the ocean be a guide,
His source of courage to turn the tide,
He sets out on a brand new course,
The salt and spray a driving force:
There is no shame in going against the tide
The shark’s spirit can live on in you,
So take the dive into the ocean blue,
We invite you to express yourself - don’t be shy.
